Engine and performance

Yamaha tunes the FZ for a relaxed, refined delivery rather than outright speed, and it does that beautifully, but it is not the quicker bike.

Refinement and comfort

Yamaha wins here. The FZ-S engine is exceptionally smooth and its upright riding position is easy over long distances. The Apache is not harsh, but it is a sportier bike, and its focus is on giving you feedback rather than filtering it out.

Mileage

The Apache is rated at around 45 kmpl. The smaller, gentler FZ-S typically returns a little more. Over a year of 40 km days the difference is real but modest, and the Apache gives you considerably more performance for it.

Features and technology

The Apache offers ride modes and SmartXonnect connectivity on higher variants, along with a race-inspired cluster. Yamaha offers a clean digital display and Bluetooth connectivity on some variants. The Apache generally gives you more equipment for the money.

The FZ-S has aged into a comfortable, handsome commuter rather than a sport bike, and there is nothing wrong with that. But if you are shopping in this class for the feeling of a quick motorcycle, the Apache is nearly 5 PS ahead and it is not close. Ride both and the difference announces itself in the first hundred metres.
