Bike Left Unused for Months? How to Store and Restart a TVS
Many families in Araria have someone who works in Delhi, Punjab or Gujarat and comes home only for Chhath, Holi or the harvest. The bike stays behind in the courtyard. Three or four months later the owner returns, turns the key and gets nothing. Most of that trouble is avoidable, and the fixes cost very little. Here is what we tell customers at the showroom.
What actually goes wrong when a bike sits idle
A parked bike is not a resting bike. Things keep ageing, only without anyone noticing. Four problems account for nearly every no-start we see after a long gap.
- The battery slowly drains by itself and may be too weak to crank the engine.
- Old petrol turns stale and leaves a sticky film in the fuel system.
- Tyres lose air, and the same patch of rubber carries the weight for months.
- Brakes, clutch and chain pick up rust, especially after a humid monsoon.
How to park it before you leave
Ten minutes of preparation saves a workshop visit. Do these in order, and ask a neighbour or family member to follow the same routine if the bike will be ridden or moved.
- Wash the bike and dry it fully, then lightly oil the chain.
- Park it under a roof on a dry floor, never on bare wet earth.
- Put it on the centre stand so the tyres do not carry the weight, if your model has one.
- Inflate the tyres a little above the usual pressure.
- Cover it with a breathable cloth, not a sealed plastic sheet that traps moisture.
For petrol, do not leave the tank nearly empty, because the bare metal inside can rust. A fuller tank is better for a stay of a few months. If the gap will be longer than that, ask us about draining or treating the fuel. A commuter such as the TVS Radeon or the TVS Jupiter will start far more readily if someone kicks or self-starts it for a few minutes every two weeks or so.
What about an electric scooter?
An electric scooter has no petrol to go stale, but its battery still needs care. Do not leave it fully drained or fully charged for months. Check the owner's manual for the storage level your model recommends, and plug it in briefly now and then if someone is at home. Our guide to electric scooter battery life and warranty explains how the pack ages. If you own an iQube, ask us for the right storage routine before you travel.
What to check before the first ride back
Do not just turn the key and ride off. Spend a few minutes on the basics first.
- Look at the tyres for cracks and set the pressure properly.
- Squeeze both brake levers and check the pedal or lever does not feel stuck.
- Check the engine oil level and look for any fresh leak on the floor.
- Inspect the chain, then clean and oil it if it looks dry or rusty.
- Make sure insurance and pollution certificate dates have not run out while you were away.
If the engine starts, let it idle for a minute and ride gently for the first few kilometres. After a long gap we suggest an early service even if the odometer says it is not due. See what happens at each service so you know what to ask for.
When to call the workshop instead
Some signs mean stop and get it checked: a battery that will not hold a charge, petrol that smells sour, a grinding noise from the brakes, or water inside the air filter box after a flooded season. Our service centre can test the battery, flush the fuel system and clean the brakes quickly. If the bike sat through high water, read our notes on monsoon riding and flooded roads first. Cost depends on what is found, so we will tell you before any work begins.

Related questions
01How long can a petrol bike stand without starting?
A few weeks is usually fine. After a month or two the battery may be weak and the petrol starts to age. Starting it every two weeks or so for several minutes helps a lot.
02Should I disconnect the battery when the bike is parked for months?
It can help, but the right method differs between models and keyless or connected features can be affected. Ask our service team to do it, so no wiring or settings are disturbed.
03Is it better to keep the fuel tank full or empty?
A fuller tank is better for a few months because it leaves less bare metal to rust. For a much longer gap, ask us whether the fuel should be drained or treated.
04Does a long idle period affect my warranty?
Normal storage does not cancel a warranty on its own. Damage caused by neglect, such as a dead battery left for too long, may not be covered. Keep your service book and invoices handy and ask us about your specific terms.
