TVS Apache RR 310 vs Yamaha R15: How Much Supersport Do You Need?

The Yamaha R15 is the bike that introduced a generation of Indian riders to full-fairing motorcycling. The TVS Apache RR 310 sits a class above it in every measurable way. The real question is whether you need that much motorcycle.

Performance

The Apache RR 310 makes 38 PS from a 312.12 cc reverse-inclined liquid cooled engine. The R15 produces roughly 18.4 PS from around 155 cc. This is not a close contest, and it should not be, because these are bikes from different classes that simply happen to share a silhouette.

Ride modes and electronics

The Apache offers four ride modes: Sport, Track, Urban and Rain, plus a TFT cluster with SmartXonnect connectivity. Rain mode is not a brochure feature in this part of the country, it earns its place from June onwards. The R15 has its own well judged electronics for its class.

Comfort and usability

Both are committed, sporty motorcycles. The Apache at 174 kg is the heavier and more substantial machine, which makes it more stable at speed and more tiring at walking pace. The R15 is lighter and easier to use every day, which is a large part of why it sells so well.

Running cost

The Apache is rated at around 30 kmpl and the smaller R15 returns considerably more. Consumables cost more on the bigger bike too. If the motorcycle is also your daily transport, this difference is worth taking seriously.

Which one should you buy?

• Choose the Apache RR 310 if you want a genuine 300 cc class supersport with four ride modes and a TFT cluster.
• Choose the Yamaha R15 if you want supersport looks with 150 cc class running costs.
• For the same Apache engine without the fairing, look at the Apache RTR 310.

Be honest about how you will use it. If the bike is your only transport and you ride 40 km a day, the R15 lower running cost is a serious argument. If you want the real thing and you can absorb the running cost, the RR 310 is in a different league and it is not close.
