TVS Ronin vs Royal Enfield Classic 350: Modern or Traditional?

The Royal Enfield Classic 350 is a genuine cultural object in India, and nobody buys one purely on specifications. The TVS Ronin makes the opposite case: same relaxed spirit, far less weight, considerably less money. Both arguments are valid.

Engine and character

This is the striking part: both make about the same power, at 20.4 PS for the Ronin and roughly 20.2 PS for the Classic 350. The Classic gets there with 349 cc and a long-stroke thump that is a large part of its appeal. The Ronin uses 225.9 cc and revs more freely. Neither is better, but only one of them is buying on the numbers.

Weight, and why it matters here

Around 35 kg separates these two. In Araria market traffic, on narrow lanes, at a standstill on a slope, and if the bike ever goes over, that difference is felt constantly. For a shorter or lighter rider, the Ronin is a far less intimidating motorcycle to own.

Ride quality on district roads

The Ronin has a relaxed riding position, good suspension travel and enough ground clearance for unmade roads. The Classic is planted and unhurried, with its mass working in its favour on smooth open highway and against it everywhere else.

Running cost

The Ronin is rated at around 40 kmpl and its smaller engine costs less to feed. Tyres, chains and service parts are generally cheaper too. Over five years the gap adds up to a meaningful sum for most buyers here.
